2024 Wrap-up

I want to help set intention for the next season, in part, by recounting the last.

Greatest Pics

Mixmaster

I make mixes for getting work done. They are about an hour in length, begin with a poem and consist mostly of sound tracks from shows, movies and games, as well as classical and jazz. Generally, music with lyrics tends to be situated at the end, so that when you hear singing it is time to start coming out of trance.

obit

When I train new explorers I ask them to complete an obituary. While most people have never crafted their own narrative as a short, news article, I think it is important in framing the value of a new year.

Besides, as a poet and as an explorer, endings, in some way or form, are a consistent, compelling muse.

Chris, aged 45, of Worcester, Massachusetts, passed away on 31.DEC.2024. Raised in Northampton, Massachusetts, he was a passionate poet and explorer of life. His poetry, much like abandoned buildings, captured the ruins of a moment, lived fully. Chris viewed jiu-jitsu as a poetic dance of intention and precision, believing that poetry is jiu-jitsu wrestling with things unsaid, which he wanted to be good at, but you know how it goes.

In 1996, Chris began exploring the Northampton State Hospital, a journey that became a life-defining project, igniting his love for urban exploration. He described it as the first place he felt safe, and his explorations there were a continuous source of inspiration and discovery.

Throughout his life, Chris worshipped and served love, transforming a tragic beginning into a somewhat entertaining memoir, that you’ve probably not heard of, which is fine.

Beyond his explorations, Chris was known for his reflective nature, often encouraging others to contemplate their own journeys through exercises like writing personal obituaries. His belief in continuous learning and self-improvement was evident in his dedication to jiu-jitsu, where he not only honed his skills but also drew inspiration for leadership and mentorship within the exploration community.

Chris is survived by his beloved daughter. A memorial service will be held at Northampton Community Gardens, where loved ones and fellow writers and explorers will gather to celebrate his life and legacy.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the “Society for the Preservation of Abandoned Chairs placed in Hallways with Peeling Paint,” reflecting Chris’s commitment to finding beauty in the overlooked and forgotten.
